March 11-12 (2023) Are Those Pigs in the Trash?

I finished off my trip on the Ghan with a quick stop in Adelaide. Love Adelaide! So vibey. The food market was great. I ate there every day. The best part–I was there during The Fringe. The Fringe is a huge music festival with over 60,000 artists–at least that is what the sign said. I did not attend the actual Fringe so I cannot say if there were 60,000, I did catch a few acts on the street–buskers. My goal was to take a few short videos and combine them to share some of the music. After I filmed this one, I was done. There was just no way I was going to get anything better than this VERY HAPPY dancer. I was videoing this group and the next thing I knew she was dancing in front of my phone–no way to get around including her in the video!! I hope you enjoy her dancing as much as she did. Oh yeah and the music is good too!

Went for a run in the park and ran into these beauties, galahs or pink and grey cockatoos or rose-breasted cockatoos. They are pretty much like our pigeons–they are everywhere you see an open space. Beautiful!!! I wonder if people come to the US and think, “WOW!!! Look at those pigeons. I cannot take enough photos of them. They are so beautiful.” I am not sure the people of Australia feel that way about these, but I did.

I went to the Art Gallery of South Australia where I saw the most shocking piece of art I have seen in real life. The instillation is titled, We Are All Flesh. I did not take photos because I just wanted to walk around it and stare at it. If you are interested in seeing a photo, go to this website Cavallo Hoof Boots. If you want to see a photo and read about how some people in the art world are responding, go to this website Fine Print Magazine–they are not happy about the piece. As a researcher, I spent about 30 minutes in the gallery where the piece is hanging. I wanted to see how people responded when they walked in as it is large and centered in the middle of the room. Not many looked directly at it and most people turned away. I heard a woman say, “Disgusting!” Of course, no one read what the artwork represented. I read why the artist made it and the material used and found it more interesting.

I did take a few photos I will share. This work was really cool. Yayoi Kusama: THE SPIRITS OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS. You walk into a room covered in orange with black dots. You go up 2 steps and look into a small square hole in a box and this is what you see. You become a part of the art–you can see me in one of the photos. I guess cute pumpkins are more attractive than dead horses.

Continuing on the art scene trail, Adelaide has a lot of cool street art. I think my favorite piece is the pigs getting in the trash. The flowers in the second picture light up at night.

I like Salvadore Dali’s work–strange like him. I like it some of it, but the stick legs get old to me after a few pieces of his work. Adelaide was displaying some of his work that said original–so I guess it is.
