August 17–Irrational Fears

I had to get my second rabies shot at a different location than the health department (will not tell where to protect the person mentioned). While I was getting the shot, the nurse mentioned she had an irrational fear. Eventually, I asked about her fear. Very slowly she spelled out the word FROG. I said, “Frogs! You are afraid of frogs!” She nearly came out of her skin. She explained she could not hear the word, see them in videos or pictures, or go outside by herself. Someone had to be with her outside at all times, because of her of seeing a frog. She had her house built with a closed in back porch so she could hang out her clothes. She did not allow her children to go outside or to the park when they were young (she was in her 60s would be my guess). She did not allow them to have children’s books with frog pictures. I thought at the time that seemed a little crazy, but OK frogs it is.

Today, I went to the Farmer’s Market in Greensboro. I was behind a woman who had dropped a plant she just purchased. The plant container must have been made of glass. Her friend exclaimed in a squeaky voice. I would help you clean that up, but I am terrified of glass! Another irrational fear (or in my world it is). I wanted to ask her, “Do you have plastic cups in your house?” “When you go out to eat do you ask for a paper or plastic cup?” I wondered what I am supposed to be learning from these life experiences? Is there something I am missing? I am afraid of masks. Could be the Jason thing for me. Do you have any irrational fears you would like to share?
