December 8 Jakarta

Jakarta has a great way to bring the community together. They have Car-less Sunday on the main street from 5:30am to 11:00am. It is great. People are out running, biking, walking, and purchasing from street venders. This is wonderful! The main highway is closed to cars and open only to pedestrians. I ran this morning. Did not get in my 4 miles–I did great for the first 2 then felt like I was going to pass out. I had to stop a couple of times. I thought running on South Padre Island, Texas, USA was hot. This is the hottest I have ever been running. The temperature was only 86 degrees, but wow the humidity. See the pictures below of the crowds of people who show up. I saw several people running in hijabs. I admire them. I do not think I could to it. I barely made 3.5 miles in shorts and t-shirt!!

  1. The car-less Sunday is a wonderful idea! I wonder if any USA cities do anything like it. Your photos are great and give a surreal glimpse of the city. Thank you for sharing.
