January 3: Fish, Chickens, and Cats—Oh My!!!

Friday is here! I leave my Serawai Tribe family to go back to Bengkulu City tomorrow. I have some great memories! I will miss them!!!

This week I made friends with the family’s chick. It’s brother died just before I arrived. It imprints on people now. When I sit on the front porch, the chick jumps up in my lap. Chicken Who Likes People. He tries to get under your hand, like a dog, if you do not pay attention.

Wednesday I went for a run and found some kids playing badminton. I stopped to play. They play in the road. I am not very good, but so much fun! Playing Badminton in Indonesia 1. I was playing with a young girl, when this guy shows up. She says he is her cousin and wants to play. Playing Badminton Indonesia 2.

I met the Assistant Chief of the village– also met both Chiefs (village and local community). They must approve your stay. I am here to meet with the native healers, dukun, to talk to them about interviewing them and watching them complete their healing rituals. The woman in the picture is a dukun. She is so cute and full of energy. Look how big I look!!!! I told her I loved her shirt. She went in the house and came out with the one you see pictured. She insisted I take it!!

Latest cat photograph. This one is healthier than the last few cats. The woman who owns the cats is a fish farmer. She raises them to feed the family. She is also an educator. Every educator I met has a second job.

For all my teacher family and friends, I visited Riska and Putra’s mother’s junior high school. Many of the family members are teachers or retired teachers. You might want to take a long hard look at the pictures and think about this. I did! I was excited to see the teachers are teaching about conservation and ways to save the environment. The bulletin boards are covered in student work related to cleaning up the earth and recycling. The family picture with me lives at the school. He is the school police. Make sure to read the captions for the pictures.

One of my favorite fruits here is rambutan. You can buy it in the US, but I never think it is very good. Here I really like it. I had it when I was here in 2018. Found it at home, but did not like it. Maybe you have to be here to appreciate the taste. This is my first time seeing them harvest the fruit. Eating Rambutan. The kids in the photograph made me think of when Grandma and Grandpa Pat would cut a watermelon and we all lined up to eat it.

    • I am learning a lot about their beliefs. If you are a man and your wife cannot get pregnant, he needs to blend the white of a raw duck eggs, a certain seed, honey, and water and drink it 3 times a week. The dukun says she helped 100 people with this remedy and all got pregnant.
