Fish, Chickens, and Ducks of a Feather October 4, 2025

This was a fun day that brought back a lot of childhood memories.

I started this morning feeding hundreds of tiny catfish. The water came alive the moment the food hit. Ripples, splashes, and tiny fish faces sucking in the food. The farmer told me he sells the fish at the local market for $1.25 for 2 pounds. This reminded me my Grandpa bought fish from Penny’s Minnow Farm in Coats, NC. Daddy took us. I remember the smells and the fish.

The farmer showed me exactly how he wanted the chickens fed. I told him about my Grandma and Grandpa raising chickens and that my Dad does now, using an incubator. This farmer buys duck eggs and tucks them under the hens to hatch. Each chicken will eventually sell for $3.21 at the market. I bet you wish you could buy a whole chicken for $3.21. Right now, that amount will not buy you much of anything.

The ducks were a lively bunch, full of chatter and energy. However, they were afraid of me. Ducks know their people and flock to them. I shared how my Grandpa raised ducks for our pond and they came up to the house every day to eat. Each duck will sell for $4.38.
