January 10: Softshell River Turtle and New Additions to the Family

Have you ever felt like this?????? I think I have!

About 2 months ago, someone brought a Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle to the house where I am staying. This an endangered turtle species. They took blood from it today. They are trying to get its DNA as a way to test river water to determine the presence of the turtle without seeing it. The idea is–they can test the river water and if epithelial skin cells are present in the water then the turtle lives there. They do not need to see the turtle. I took a couple of videos. They did finally get blood, but it was so difficult to find the vein. The first video shows the vet trying to find a vein. Finding the Vein for Taking Blood from a Cantor’s Giant Softshell Turtle. The second video shows him attempting to get blood. Attempting Blood Withdrawal from Cantor’s Softshell Turtle

My little family is growing. I now have a chicken that stays on the porch. The cat had her babies today!!! Of course, I will post pictures when she brings them out. I hope the Tom cat does not get them.
